The flu shot is a vaccine that is primarily administered through an injection in your arm. Some flu vaccinations are available as a nasal spray, but injection is the most common form for administering this vaccine. The flu shot is developed to target and protect against three to four strains of flu viruses that could be prevalent during flu season in the upcoming year. Flu shots should be administered annually to ensure that your body is able to develop the appropriate antibodies to protect you against the ever-changing strains of the flu.
Who should get the flu shot?
We recommend that most patients six months of age and older get the flu shot every year. Children, from the ages of six months to five years old, are especially susceptible to the flu and can benefit from the flu vaccine. It is also beneficial for patients who live in assisted living, nursing homes, or other forms of long-term care facilities to get the flu shot, as they live in a shared space. If you are already beginning to experience flu symptoms, you should not get the flu shot as this can increase your risk of catching the flu.
When should I get the flu shot?
We recommend you get the flu shot as soon as it becomes available, typically by October, but you can get it at any point in time. It takes about two weeks for your body to develop the appropriate antibodies to prepare your immune system and protect your body from the flu.
Are there any side effects?
While you cannot catch the flu from the flu shot, you may experience some flu or cold-like symptoms as side effects of the vaccine. These temporary side effects can include aching, nausea, or a slight fever.
Exceed Urgent Care also offers flu testing and treatment if you are already experiencing flu-like symptoms.
