It is essential for us to feel well and healthy in our daily life in order to function at our best. Unfortunately, common colds and contagious illnesses can sometimes be unavoidable since we are constantly exposed to outside invaders and come in contact with many people throughout the day. A disease or illness that is abrupt and onset is known as an acute illness. These illnesses often occur suddenly, and typically last a short period of time.
Types of Acute Illnesses
Some common acute illnesses that many patients experience include:
The flu, or influenza, is a contagious illness that affects the respiratory system. It is a viral illness that impacts the nose, throat, and sometimes lungs. The severity of the flu can vary from mild to severe along with symptoms. The flu is highly contagious, and symptoms often come on suddenly. Symptoms of the flu can include:
- Sore throat
- Runny nose
- Body ache
Although the flu often spreads rapidly, and cases of widespread illness are classified as “flu season,” the best way to prevent the flu is by receiving a vaccine each year.
Bronchitis is an illness that is caused by inflammation within the lining of the bronchial tubes. These are the tubes that are responsible for carrying air to and from the lungs. It is usually a result of a developing cold or respiratory infection, and cases can range from acute to chronic. Acute bronchitis is a lot more common with symptoms of constant coughing up of thick and discolored mucus. Chronic bronchitis is more serious, and includes constant irritation or inflammation to the lining of the bronchial tubes.
Sinusitis, or rhinosinusitis, is a common acute illness that affects about 1 in 8 adults annually. It is generally caused by viruses or bacteria that infects the sinuses and continue to multiply rapidly. The body responds to the infection by causing the sinus lining to swell. This stops the outlets which clear the sinuses from being able to drain them. This causes excess mucus to accumulate within the nose and sinuses, resulting in uncomfortable symptoms.
Upper Respiratory Infection
Upper respiratory infections are one of the most common acute illnesses that affect patients annually. It is caused by contagious viruses or bacteria that infect the upper respiratory tract including the nose, throat, larynx, pharynx, and bronchi. There are different types of respiratory infections with symptoms that affect specific parts of the upper respiratory tract. Symptoms can include:
- Trouble and pain swallowing
